Car Seat Company & Intel Smart Clip:
Child to Parent & Car Triangulation
Problem Statement:
Create a connection that triangulates the child to car to parent relationship to reduce the amount of child heatstroke in a car.
My Role:
Lead Product Designer - innovation council member & R&D Development Experience Liaison
Platforms:
Car Seat Accessory
Bluetooth Compatible Hardware
Native iOS
Android
Objective:
On average, 37 children under the age of 15 die each year from heatstroke after being left in a vehicle. Nearly every state has experienced at least one death since 1998. It takes only a few minutes for a child to overheat, suffocate and pass away in a car. Compared to adults, a child's body heats up three to five times faster. When left in a hot car, a child's major organs begin to shut down when their temperature reaches 104 degrees Fahrenheit, according to healthychildren.org
Key Results:
Alert a driver, parent or caregiver when a child has been left in a vehicle unattended
Alert a driver, parent or caregiver when a child needs a break from their carseat
Alert a driver, parent or caregiver when the inside car temperature is too hot
Alert a driver, parent or caregiver when the safety harness is not connected
Ability to add send an SMS to alert a third party of potential hazards & car location
Ability to pair up to 4 car seats per device
The Inspiration:
The last major pioneer of car seat safety technology was the Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) system. With contemporary technology at our finger tips & innovation moving faster than ever - the goal was set to create something groundbreaking to increase safety of car seats using technology to assist. The team was assembled across Industrial Design, Product Design & Innovation, Marketing, & IT along with a few friendly outsourced specialist to help solve these challenges.
Learn
With Intel’s Smartchip in hand we began researching rapidly all the possible ways to deliver this technology to the consumer. What would they want, what was available & what could we achieve feasibly within budget and scope.
Test
There were two types of testing occurring congruently. Hardware testing and fitment alongside user research. After multiple variations of each we were able to find the best approach for each based on user interviews, exploratory testing & heuristic reviews.
Build
Once the app idea and hardware was ready we started partnering with a manufacturer to bring it to life across the iOS/Android platforms and the car seat integrations.
Peace of mind with just a clip.
